It's getting cold, and with rising prices of fuel we will be turning heating up with a bit more caution. That said, we don't have to sit at home freezing. Wrist warmers are great way to keep your body temperature up while typing (yes I am wearing mine right now), sewing, reading, and you can wear them outside too.
Here are my new wooly upcycled wrist warmers:

There's lots of tutorials on You tube how to knit or crochet new ones. In my case, I firmly believe in upcycling or reusing what you already have.
This is what I used:

Yes, it is a pair of socks. They started off as a really comfy pair of hiking socks. Unfortunately, I managed to shrink them in a wash, and I most likely put them in a tumble drier too. This meant they shrank way too much to be comfortable on my feet.
But, it turns out they are perfect to make into a lovely pair of wrist warmers!
Let me show you how.
First, cut a hole in the heel of the sock.
About one inch will do. Cut vertically, from top of the heel towards the toes.
This will give you opening for the thumb.
Then chop off the bit where the toes go.

Yes they still look like socks, but bear with me.
Next you find a nice thick wool or chunky thread in a colour that matches your socks, I mean wrist warmers. Get a needle with large eye, one that will be ok to thread the wool through it. They can be a bit tricky to thread but trust me it's worth using chunky wool.
Fold the edge of the hole to the inside of the sock and stitch with blanket stitch all around the thumb opening and the fingers opening.
Check that you have folded over enough so you can freely move your fingers.
Add some decorative stitches if you wish.

Now repeat it all on the second sock.
As the thumb opening is on the side, there is no left or right hand wrist warmer, they can be worn on both hands.
Put them on and admire your handy work while being nice and toasty.
Happy sewing my friends!
